1 Choose a photo to work from that does not have a lot of details or texture. It is best to work from a gray-scale photo in order to be more interpretive with color.

2 Use a viewfinder to locate a section of the photo for your abstract composition. Look for sections that have clear shapes. Try finding an area with three or five main shapes. Look for parts of the photograph that also have contrast.

3 Sketch a square or rectangle on your paper. Draw the main shapes you see in the viewfinder. Pay attention to the lights and darks of your composition. Divide the composition into three or five main areas. Create different thumbnail sketches based on each of these areas.
